Activities
and Lifestyle in Dusseldorf
Seemingly
to have reaped only the good from Germany's postwar "economic miracle",
a walk through certain sections of Dusseldorf is reminiscent of
a stroll in Paris. The stores, especially along Konigsalle, are
chic, stylish and expensive. The city's inhabitants live up to their
native moniker as members of Germany's Fashion Capital. Interspersed
among the sleek, modern business towers and historical edifices
are a large array of parks, gardens and tranquil corners. One such
lovely setting is romantic Hofgarten Park, which is surrounded by
the city's numerous, world class museums.
Another
favorite antidote to the city's teeming, business-oriented lifestyle,
is the well-preserved Altstadt, or Old Town, along the Rhein. With
its antique squares, cobblestone streets, gothic Rathaus and Castle
Tower, there's more than enough to satiate the most romantic of
travelers. The "Altstadt" is also strewn with bars, excellent restaurants,
traditional pubs and vibrancy found nowhere else in the city. Try
"Brauerei im Füchschen" for some real German food and a great atmosphere,
"Im goldenen Kessel", "Zum Schlüssel"... If you like beer you should
definitely try the Alt beer, typical of Düsseldorf.
The city
is home to many museums and countless theatres and the impressive
German Opera House, which all attest to the city's standing as a
major arts center. Düsseldorf is also a paradise for shoppers -
the Königsallee with its classy shops and pavement cafés is now
firmly established as one of the world's most elegant shopping boulevards
and the fashion capital of Germany.
